How to claim your super back
✓
Work in Australia and earn super
Your employer pays 11.5% of your wages into your nominated super fund every quarter. Check your payslips to confirm they're actually doing it.
2
Leave Australia permanently
Your visa must have expired or be expired/cancelled. You can't claim DASP while still in Australia on a valid visa.
3
Apply for DASP online via ATO
Go to ato.gov.au and search "DASP". You'll need your super fund name and member number. The process takes about 20 minutes.
4
Money lands in your account
After the 65% tax is deducted, the remaining amount gets paid to your nominated bank account. Usually processed within 28 days.
⚠️
Do NOT wait too long
If you don't claim within a certain period, unclaimed super gets transferred to the ATO as "lost super". It doesn't disappear completely but it becomes significantly harder to retrieve.
💡
Before you leave: Log into your super fund account and make sure your address and contact details are updated. Lost super often stays lost because the fund can't contact the person it belongs to.
🔍
Lost super from previous jobs? If you worked multiple jobs and didn't always use the same super fund, you may have super scattered across multiple funds. Check the ATO's "Find my super" tool on myGov — it searches all registered funds for your TFN. Free, takes 2 minutes.
⚠️
Super not showing on your payslip? Employers are legally required to pay super. If your payslip shows no super contributions after 3+ months, your employer may be pocketing it. Report it to the ATO — they take this seriously and will chase it on your behalf.
